Do You Know About iNaturalist?

I got the good news that I'm now an Ambassador for the iNaturalist app/website. You can use this app to upload photos and sounds of animals (living, dead, eggs, nests, bone, scat, tracks) and plants/fungi. These are called sightings. If you know what it is you're uploading, you can select it from the closest matches. If you don't know, you can pick an upper classification of a species (like "birds" or "mushrooms"). You can also obscure your location for sightings that occur on your private property. This will change the pinpointed location to a boxed area. Unless you have a lot of property, this will keep things private.
You can also do all that through the website. Those of you who are excellent photographers can easily use your photos that aren't on your phone.
You can also make observations. This is when you explore through the sightings everyone else has uploaded. When you spot something you know, you can either agree with the identification if it's specific (like "creeping thistle") or if you think the ID is incorrect, you can enter your suggestion (and even add a comment).
From September 18 - 28, iNaturalist is looking to get even more out in nature, exploring, and observing. It's being called iNatTogether and I'd love for you to join in. If you're around Washington or Hackettstown, NJ, maybe we can get a group together.
Identify species while helping to protect them! Engage people in nature and science
Allowing anyone with a smartphone or camera to explore nature and contribute to science and conservation.
Accelerate biodiversity science and conservation
Impacts of iNaturalist: crowdsourcing the world’s largest dataset on biodiversity and powering conservation projects.
Once your observation is uploaded, other iNaturalist community members can confirm or correct the identification.
Observations with consensus on the identification are shared with other databases used extensively for science and conservation.
Your photo is now biodiversity data!

Local Non-Profit Spotlight - CASA-SHaW
CASA SHaW provides well-trained, trauma-informed volunteers to serve as advocates in court for children living in foster care. Their goal is to ensure that every child served has a safe, permanent home and the resources and services needed to thrive and not just survive adverse childhood experiences.
If you have the dedication, compassion, and TIME, consider becoming one of their advocates. Not only does CASA need monetary donations, but they run on volunteer advocates. Their grants were decimated by the Trump/Musk cuts because CASA helps all people of all genders and sexual orientation.
Reach out to their Volunteer Trainer, Marnie Carrick at marnie@casashaw.org or call 908-689-5515.
